This non-partisan, non-affiliated, and non-profit body of older Americans was established by the U.S. Congress in1994 and held their inaugural session in 1997. The group provides an advocacy forum for older Americans to express their needs directly to the Congress of the United States via passing Resolutions that intend to educate and inform Senators and Representatives of Congress alike, and that will raise public awareness not only among seniors but also with the general public.
The Nevada Delegation played a large role in passing the state Silver Alert System for missing vulnerable senior citizens, similar to the Amber Alert for children. They are now working on a nationwide alert system.
The National Silver Haired Congress will hold its next annual session in Alexandria, Virginia in August.
The five Nevada delegates have a wide variety of experience. Michael Clark, the proprietor of On The Road Bookstore, had a 25 year career in newspapers.
Lonnie Strait has worked as an advocate for seniors and mentally ill adults for many years. She is retired and enjoys many leisure activities including gardening. She is currently editing a gardening book for a local artist and gardener.
Russ Schoenbeck has been a local resident for over 30 years. He served in the US Marine Corps and is retired from the State of Nevada. He wants to continue to have the needs of seniors brought to light and help them be resolved.
Dr. Herb Randall currently serves as President of the Nevada Silver Haired Legislative Forum and Silver Senator with the Nevada Delegation of the National Silver Haired Congress.
Lucy Peres is the state’s other Silver Senator. She is President of the Nevada Delegation of the Nevada Silver Haired Congress. Peres is also the past President of the Nevada Silver Haired Legislative Forum. She is a current board member of HealthInsight, a private, non-profit community-based organization dedicated to improving the healthcare systems.
